Statement attributable to the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, on the MINUSMA Force helicopter crash in Tabankort, northern Mali

The Under-Secretary-General wishes to convey his profound sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims

The Under-Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the news of a helicopter crash today near Tabankort, in Gao region in northern Mali. The crash claimed the lives of two German peacekeepers.

The helicopter in question was conducting surveillance over Tabankort in the aftermath of violent clashes between the signatory armed groups, Coordination des Mouvements de l’Azawad and the Plateforme, which erupted on 11 July in northern Mali.

The Under-Secretary-General wishes to convey his profound sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims and expresses his condolences to the Government of Germany, and to MINUSMA personnel.
