This programme will contribute to solving Guinea’s development challenges in the health sector

TOKYO, Japan, June 21, 2017/APO/ --

1. On June 20, following the Japan-Republic of Guinea Summit Meeting held in Tokyo, Mr. Hisanobu Hasama, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Guinea, and H.E. Mr. Senkoun Sylla, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Guinea to Japan, signed and exchanged notes concerning 200 million yen in grant aid to Guinea (for an economic and social development programme) in the presence of Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Prof. Alpha Conde, President of the Republic of Guinea.

2. This programme will contribute to solving Guinea’s development challenges in the health sector through the improvement of the access to health services and the improvement of the quality of those services by providing Guinean institutions such as health facilities with medical care equipment and manufactured goods among others.

3. From 2014 until the end of 2015, the Ebola virus disease has spread widely in Guinea and the country suffered serious social and economic damages. One of the main causes of the occurrence of such an unprecedented situation is said to be the country’s vulnerable health systems. Presently, the Guinean Government is making efforts to strengthen the country’s health systems based on its post-Ebola socio-economic recovery strategy (2015-2017) and Japan’s assistance is expected to also contribute to this effort.

4. During the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development held in August 2016, Japan declared it will “strengthen the Capacity for Response as well as Prevention and Preparedness against Public Health Emergencies” and “promote universal health coverage in Africa (UHC).” (PDF). This assistance is the materialization of this commitment.
