JUBA, South Sudan, June 6, 2017/APO/ --

The National Prisons Service of South Sudan (NPSSS), in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is graduating 143 inmates in extensive practical vocational skills in eight trades at the Vocational Training Center, Juba Central Prison.

The UNDP Access to Justice and Rule of Law Project, with funding from the Kingdom of Netherlands, supported the National Prisons Service of South Sudan to promote prisoner rehabilitation through a pilot Vocational Training Centre at Juba Central Prison to check recidivism by imparting technical skills to the inmates to enable them to earn their livelihoods and facilitate their rehabilitation in society when released.

UNDP supported the renovation and equipping of the Vocational Training Centre, as well as development of training curriculum, and engagement of qualified instructors and endorsement by line ministries and government departments. Inmates are trained in eight trades: carpentry, masonry, electrician, welding, vehicle mechanics, agriculture, hair dressing and tailoring. Prison staff have also been trained to work as trainers going forward. The facility has been registered as a commercial company and is marketing its services and products to make the workshop self-sustainable.
