Today, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the FIFA (https://www.FIFA.com) President Gianni Infantino met with Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya.

Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya (EN):

"We also discussed issues about infrastructure improvement and development, which is very key in my country, as we don’t have a proper infrastructure. So, this is everything we were talking about. We need to have infrastructure so that that can give a platform to the players."

Football Association of Malawi President Fleetwood Haiya (EN):

"We’re talking about infrastructure development and improvement: most of the stadiums in Malawi are owned by the government, so the government is the biggest player in our football in Malawi. This is why I invited the President to come to my country so that we can also sit down with the team. Finally, we also talked about capacity-building and the technical support. You know, all the schools, what we need is just capacity-building and the technical support, and maybe the technical equipment. I’m sure that, with these few goals that I have given to the President, we are going to move our football to another level in Malawi."

2023-12-21 Health Organization (WHO) has approved the use of an mpox vaccine for the first time, which it says should facilitate “timely and increased access” for millions at risk in Africa where the latest outbreak has infected more than 20,000 so far this year.

The MVA-BN vaccine from the Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic was prequalified by the WHO on Friday and has already been approved in Europe and the United States, for use by adults.

WHO approval will accelerate access for millions, to reduce transmission and help contain the outbreak.

WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the prequalification of this vaccine is an important step in the fight against the mpox virus in Africa and for the future.

“We now need urgent scale up in procurement, donations and rollout to ensure equitable access to vaccines where they are needed most, alongside other public health tools, to prevent infections, stop transmission and save lives,” Mr. Ghebreyesus said.

Vaccine administration

The MVA-BN vaccine can be given in two doses to people 18 years and older, four weeks apart, which has an estimated 82 per cent effectiveness.

For infants, young children, pregnant women and immunocompromised people, the vaccine may be used in situations where the benefits of the vaccine are greater than potential risks.

In instances where the vaccine supply is limited, the health organization recommends distribution in single doses, which is 76 per cent effective.

WHO said prequalification of the vaccine will help accelerate procurement by governments and international agencies such as vaccine alliance Gavi and UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

It can also help fast-track regulatory approval by countries worldwide.

UN UN humanitarians are rushing to assist scores of newly displaced people in northeast Nigeria, after torrential rains caused a dam to collapse and flood the area, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said on Friday.

Alau Dam, located just over 10 miles to the south of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, collapsed in the middle of the night on Tuesday, forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Emmanuel Bigenimana, the head of WFP’s office in Maiduguri, said that he managed to fly over the city in a UN humanitarian air service (UNHAS) helicopter dispatched by WFP, to conduct a rapid assessment of damage and needs.

“What I have seen is really heartbreaking,” he said, describing homes, infrastructure, roads, schools, hospitals submerged by water.

Sleeping on the street

“Many, many people - I'm talking about over 200,000 - 300,000 displaced people - are overcrowded in several IDP (internally displaced persons) camps and also on the streets.”

WFP reported that the dam collapse saw river water overrunning 50 per cent of Maiduguri and state authorities issued evacuation orders to residents in the affected areas, appealing for humanitarian support.

Speaking from the centre of one of the IDP camps, Mr. Bigenimana said that WFP has managed to open soup kitchens to provide hot meals to the affected people and was scaling up its response together with the authorities and partners.

The soup kitchens located in three camps - Teachers’ Village, Asheikh and Yerwa - aim to provide nutritious hot meals to “50,000 of the worst affected children, women, and men who have lost their homes,” WFP said, but more assistance is needed.

Compounding security crisis, economic hardship

“This is really an additional burden to already existing crises,” WFP’s Mr. Bigenimana stressed. “This region has been facing conflict for a decade.”

Borno State was one of the areas worst affected by the Boko Haram insurgency which, the UN said earlier this year, has been controlled to some extent.

“More recently, we have seen food inflation, food prices have been skyrocketing, really affecting millions of people who are facing food insecurity,” Mr. Bigenimana added.

The impacts of extreme weather are being felt severely across the country. Some 800,000 people in 29 states in Nigeria have been affected by floods as of September 2024, WFP said, and over 550,000 hectares of cropland have been flooded.

As of March this year, some 32 million people in the country were already facing acute hunger.

The UN’s food agency said that it needs $147.9 million to support food insecure people in Nigeria’s northeast over the coming six months.

For the flood-affected populations in Maiduguri, “recovery will take long,” Mr. Bigenimana said. “We need more resources to save lives and to put together efforts to respond to the crises - and also think of longer-term recovery and solutions.”

https://www.africa-newsroom.com/press/media/nigeria-hundreds-of-thousands-in-need-of-aid-as-flooding-wipes-out-homes--world-food-programme-wfp?lang=en
Ukraine remains committed to its important role in maintaining and strengthening Nigeria’s food security
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha: “I spoke with Yusuf Tuggar and thanked Nigeria for supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In Ghana, coffee producer Asili Coffee is spearheading collective action to boost national coffee production and consumption.

In the rolling hills of the Akuapem Ridge in Ghana, a quiet revolution is taking place, and coffee is at the heart of it.

John Nana Addo Francois, the visionary behind Asili Coffee, is spearheading a movement that promises to reshape rural development and socio-economic change in the region. Through his efforts, Asili Coffee is creating opportunities for farmers and fostering a culture of coffee drinking in Ghana, a country better known for its cocoa.

John is part of a broader initiative under the ACP Business-Friendly programme, funded by the European Union and the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) States. Implemented by the International Trade Centre’s (ITC) Alliances for Action, this initiative aims to bolster Ghana’s coffee production and consumption, with Akuapem Ridge at the centre of this vision.

The area has the potential to become Ghana’s coffee hub, with ideal conditions for large-scale production. Former President John Kufuor, a strong proponent of coffee farming, believes that success here could mirror the country’s cocoa success, offering farmers new economic opportunities and building a thriving value chain.

One key project driving this vision forward is the Pilot Coffee Incubator Programme, launched in Akropong in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

The incubator, spearheaded by Asili Coffee Purveyors Limited, aims to make growing coffee less risky while making it easier for young people to enter the industry. The programme is transforming coffee production in Akuapem, supported by key partners such as Ghana’s Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), the German development agency GIZ, and ITC’s Alliances for Action.

By offering free seedlings, training, and access to a ready market, the initiative ensures farmers have the tools and knowledge to succeed.

‘The incubator is important because it creates an inclusive pathway for Ghana to be recognized as a coffee-producing country. But it won’t happen overnight. This is a community project with a 10-20 year timeline,’ says John.

Akuapem is well-positioned for such a transformation. With over 100,000 tenable acres of land and a population of 250,000 – 65% of which are youth – the region offers a strong labour force that can drive large-scale production.

If fully realized, the economic potential is staggering. Each acre of land could generate $1,000 annually, translating to $100 million in income for the area. The programme’s early success is already visible, with the first cohort of farmers, who joined in 2019, now selling their yields to Asili Coffee.

Beyond production, the incubator serves as a one-stop shop for farmers, providing seedlings, training, and research and development, while also acting as an off-take point for their yields. John emphasizes the importance of covering more acreage in coffee and promoting local consumption to create a sustainable coffee culture in Ghana.

The success of the Akuapem coffee initiative depends on collaboration. Key partners such as ITC and the Ghana Cocoa Board provide crucial support in training, capacity building, and quality control. GIZ’s Agribizz contract farming agreement ensures fair pricing and guaranteed buyers for farmers, providing stability and security for those entering the coffee industry.

John is optimistic about the future of coffee in Ghana. ‘We need to learn how to consume our own produce. This allows us to dictate our destiny when it comes to raw materials,’ he says.

The Coffee Consumption Initiative, part of the broader effort to boost domestic coffee consumption, is supported by a $25,000 grant from the Inter-African Coffee Organization. This funding will help establish model coffee shops across the country, raising awareness of Ghanaian coffee and creating new jobs for young people.

Asili Coffee is now poised to drive both local production and consumption, creating lasting change for the Akuapem region and beyond.

The priorities will be to expand access to quality education for children and youth in developing countries and help create new jobs for young people across the Middle East and North Africa region
The World Bank, Qatar, and the global foundation Education Above All have announced a partnership focused on expanding quality access to education worldwide.
