Yang Jiechi Attends the Sixth Meeting of BRICS Senior Representatives on Security Issues

The meeting made political preparation for the eighth BRICS Summit to be held in Goa, India in October

As China will assume the presidency of the BRICS cooperation next year, it will actively prepare for the BRICS Summit

On September 15, 2016 local time, State Councilor Yang Jiechi attended the sixth meeting of BRICS senior representatives on security issues in New Delhi. The meeting made political preparation for the eighth BRICS Summit to be held in Goa, India in October. During the meeting, participants exchanged views on issues including cyber security, energy security, anti-terrorism, as well as situations in West Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, and reached extensive consensus on strengthening BRICS cooperation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India held a group meeting with senior representatives on security issues of all participating countries. Narendra Modi stated that the BRICS countries are playing an increasingly important constructive role in international affairs. India attaches great importance to the BRICS cooperation mechanism, and hopes that the meeting in Goa will achieve practical outcomes, further consolidate the friendly relations among the five countries, and raise the influence of developing countries and emerging market countries.

Yang Jiechi said that not long ago, the BRICS leaders successfully held an informal meeting during the G20 Hangzhou Summit, and reached important consensus on deeply boosting the BRICS cooperation. China is ready to work with all parties, on this basis, to promote the meeting in Goa a complete success and inject new impetus into the BRICS cooperation. As long as the BRICS members adhere to unity and deepen cooperation, they will surely embrace a new situation in the BRICS cooperation and development. As China will assume the presidency of the BRICS cooperation next year, it will actively prepare for the BRICS Summit, Meeting of Senior Representatives on Security Issues, Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other meetings, and work with all parties to promote the BRICS cooperation for in-depth and substantial results.

Yang Jiechi also expounded China’s stance on issues including cyber security, energy security, anti-terrorism, as well as situations in West Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
