WFP and Sudanese NGO to promote food security and nutrition in Sudan

NEW YORK, United States of America, June 30, 2016/APO/ --

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Talawiet Organization for Development (TOD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the promotion of food security and nutrition in eastern Sudan.

Through the MoU, WFP and TOD will work on designing and implementing programmes for the promotion of food security, nutrition and resilience among vulnerable groups and communities in eastern Sudan. These include nutrition education in public schools, providing school meals through home-grown school feeding as well as helping vulnerable groups and communities establish asset-creation and income-generating projects.

“We are very fortunate to have found a solid partner whose presence on the ground in eastern Sudan has made a difference in the lives of people that they assist,” said WFP Sudan Representative and Country Director Adnan Khan. “All these activities are key objectives of WFP’s current country plan for Sudan that was launched last year.”

The MoU was signed by Khan and TOD’s Executive Manager Hussein Salih Osman at a ceremony held in WFP’s premises in Khartoum.

“We are grateful to WFP for this opportunity to continue and expand our work that tackles the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition among the needy and vulnerable groups in eastern Sudan,” said TOD’s Chairman of Board Salah Ali Adam.

WFP is assisting nearly 250,000 vulnerable people in the eastern states of Kassala and Red Sea through a variety of activities that include voucher assistance, nutrition support for the prevention and treatment of malnutrition among pregnant women and nursing mothers, school feeding and creation of assets among vulnerable communities.

WFP’s operation in Sudan remains one of the agency’s largest and most complex, providing food assistance to vulnerable people in Darfur and other food-insecure groups in the east and border areas to the south.

In 2016, WFP plans to assist 4.6 million vulnerable people in Sudan through general food distribution, school meals, a nutrition programme, as well as food assistance for assets and training. To achieve this, WFP relies on its partners including international, national and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs). WFP is currently working with 74 partners of which 54 are national and local NGOs.
