Statement by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean on UN proposal for Libyan Unity

VALLETTA, Malta, October 9, 2015/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) welcomes the announcement of the UN proposal for the formation of a national unity government in Libya.

Although several members from both the internationally recognised House of Representatives in Tobruk and the Tripoli-based General National Congress, have described the latest announcement as premature, PAM calls on both sides to seize this opportunity aimed at establishing the foundations for unity in the country. The civilian population will also gain from a peaceful settlement of the differences emerging after the revolution against the Gaddafi regime in 2011.

PAM is confident that the Libyan leaders will act responsibly also in light of the role that Libya plays in the overall stability of the Mediterranean region.

PAM, as it has done in these last years, will continue to provide its political and operational assistance to the negotiations process lead by the UN Special Representative to Libya, H.E. Bernardino Leon. The Assembly will also dedicate all its efforts to support the rights and aspirations of the Libyan population, and, as done on various occasions, will facilitate, through its parliamentary diplomacy network, the national reconciliation dialogue, until all sides will feel duly represented at all institutional levels.

Today, PAM is also holding a bilateral meeting with the Libyan delegation participating at the UN/PAM Regional Seminar in Bucharest, Romania, dedicated to “Challenges posed by a preventative criminal justice response to terrorism and Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTFs)”.
