Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Mr. Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea

NEW YORK, United States of America, June 16, 2016/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

Today, the Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea. The Secretary-General commended President Condé for his commitment to revamp Guinea's economy and implementing key reforms in the security and justice sectors. He encouraged the Government of Guinea to accelerate progress towards the consolidation of peace and stability in the country, and stressed the readiness of the United Nations to accompany national stakeholders in the implementation of the agreement of 20 August 2015.

The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Guinea's contribution to MINUSMA especially given the growing threat posed by terrorist and violent extremist groups to the stability and security of Mali and the wider region. In that context, the Secretary-General counted on Guinea's support to his Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism. He also encouraged the President to support efforts to ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change and to implement Agenda 2030.
