Prime Minister Abe Visits Kenya (August 26, 2016)

On Friday, August 26, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a state visit to the Republic of Kenya, which is the host country for the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI).

On Friday, August 26, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a state visit to the Republic of Kenya, which is the host country for the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI). The main bilateral visit events held on August 26 are as follows. This marks the first visit to Kenya by a Japanese Prime Minister in 15 years, since Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori visited in 2001 (accompanied by then Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe), and is the very first state visit by a Japanese Prime Minister.
 

1 Commencing at 9:07 a.m. (local time; Friday, August 26, 3:07 p.m., Japan time), Prime Minister Abe laid a wreath at the mausoleum of the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya, which is located within the National Assembly of Kenya.

2 Commencing at 9:32 a.m. (local time; Friday, August 26, 3:32 p.m., Japan time), Prime Minister Abe attended a welcome ceremony held at the State House of Kenya. At the ceremony, Prime Minister Abe was welcomed by H.E. Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya, First Lady, General Samson Mwathethe, Chief of Defense Forces, Amb. Amina Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri, Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning, and others, after which he received a guard of honor salute.

3 Following the welcome ceremony, commencing at 9:42 a.m. (local time; Friday, August 26, 3:42 p.m., Japan time) for approximately 25 minutes, Prime Minister Abe exchanged greetings with President Kenyatta. The two leaders confirmed cooperation for the success of TICAD VI, the first TICAD to be held in Africa.
