Press Statement by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, on the peaceful conclusion of the legislative elections in The Gambia

Mohamed Ibn Chambas commends the progress achieved by the Gambians with the conduct of these legislative elections which confirm the country' steady march towards sustained peace, democracy and stability

BANJUL, Gambia, April 7, 2017/APO/ --

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, congratulates the Government and the people of The Gambia for the peaceful and inclusive legislative elections of 6 April. He applauds Gambian political parties and candidates for their active participation in the elections, as well as the Independent Electoral Commission for its efforts in ensuring the people's right to elect their representatives in the National Assembly.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas commends the progress achieved by the Gambians with the conduct of these legislative elections which confirm the country' steady march towards sustained peace, democracy and stability.

Mr. Ibn Chambas reiterates the commitment of the Office of the United Nations for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), to continue supporting The Gambia in consolidating peace and prosperity.
