Press statement by the Somalia Human Rights Working Group on the arrest of Somali journalists

NAIROBI, Kenya, October 7, 2015/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

The Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) on Somalia, consisting of EU member states, the EU, Norway, Switzerland and the United States condemns the arrest of two journalists and the closure of Universal TV in Mogadishu on 2 October 2015.

The Group is deeply concerned about continuing attacks against the media in Somalia and the recent arrest of the two journalists. The HRWG urges the Somali Government to ensure the safety and protection of journalists and media workers against harassment and unlawful arrests (of journalists and media workers). Freedom of expression for journalists is a fundamental value in any aspiring democratic society and is crucial for Somalia's continued journey towards stabilisation and sustainable peace.

The safety of journalists is essential to preserve the fundamental right to freedom of expression, guaranteed by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Group urges the Somali government to fully respect the rights of journalists and the fundamental freedoms and rights that warrant protection, including freedom of expression.
