New Permanent Representative of South Sudan presents Credentials to Director-General of United Nations Office at Geneva

Kuol Alor Kuol Arop, the new Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Mr. Arop worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan from 1975 to 2009

Kuol Alor Kuol Arop, the new Permanent Representative of South Sudan to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Michael Møller, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Arop had been working as the Director General for Administration and Finance at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan since 2012.  Before South Sudan’s secession from Sudan in 2011, Mr. Arop served as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Southern Sudan from 2010 to 2011, and as a Diplomatic Adviser in the Ministry of Regional Cooperation of the Government of Southern Sudan from May to September 2010.  From 2010 to 2012, he was a member of the delegation of the Republic of South Sudan in the negotiations with the Government of Sudan for the resolution of outstanding issues concerning the comprehensive peace agreement
 
Mr. Arop worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan from 1975 to 2009.  He was the Ambassador of Sudan to South Africa from 2004 to 2009, and concurrently was Ambassador to Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Mauritius.  He held many different posts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, including Ambassador of Sudan to Tanzania from 1996 to 2000.  He served at the Mission of Sudan to the United Nations in New York from December 1989 to July 1991; the Embassy of Sudan to Libya from September to December 1989; the Mission of Sudan to the League of Arab States and the Embassy of Sudan to Tunis from November 1985 to September 1989; and the Embassy of Sudan to Italy and the Mission of Sudan to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and the International Fund for Agricultural Development from March 1978 to August 1983.  During his career, Mr. Arop represented Sudan in numerous international and regional conferences, including United Nations meetings.
 
Mr. Arop has a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Khartoum, Faculty of Law (1969 to 1974) and is a member of the Sudan Bar Association.  He also undertook post graduate courses in the international legal studies programme  at New York University, School of Law (1990 to 1991).  He was born on 20 January 1949 in Abyei.  He is married.
