Reaching 90-90-90: What Will It Take?

DATE: Tuesday, 19 July from 15:30-16:15 South Africa time (16:30-17:15 BST time)

LOCATION: Press Conference Room 1 (LIVESTREAM HERE)

DETAILS: The international medical humanitarian organisation MSF will host a press conference this afternoon to discuss how proven strategies we’ve implemented in the field could, if implemented more widely, help initiate treatment for 30 million people with HIV treatment by 2020. While the globally-agreed “90-90-90” targets show political commitment, neglected regions like West and Central Africa, particularly those countries where coverage is below 30 percent must be addressed – make a strong call for an action plan – and strategies must be adapted depending on the context and location. In all contexts, a number of key interventions should be implemented such as “Test and Start,” community-based treatment methods, solidifying the role of HIV/TB lay counsellors, and offering early treatment and routine viral load monitoring for all people living with HIV. MSF has been treating people with HIV/AIDS since the late 1990s and currently supports treatment for more than 250,000 people living with HIV in 19 countries, primarily in Africa.

SPEAKERS:

· Eric Goemaere, HIV/TB Unit Coordinator for MSF's Southern Africa Medical Unit
· Bernard Kerschberger, MSF Research & Monetary Evaluation Coordinator in Swaziland
· Musa Ndlovu, MSF’s Community Advocacy Manager
· Sharonann Lynch, HIV/AIDS Policy Advisor at MSF (moderator)
