Joint Statement by the Spokespersons of High Representative/ Vice President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica on the situation in Guinea-Bissau

BRUSSELS, Belgium, October 9, 2015/APO (African Press Organization)/ --

The rejection of a new Government by the President in Guinea Bissau has revived political tensions in the country and put at risk efforts to overcome the political crisis that has now lasted for more than two months.

It is urgent for Guinea Bissau to have a stable government, allowing it to pursue the reform and reconstruction process. This is also crucial for the implementation of the international support announced at the Donor's Round Table held in Brussels earlier this year.

The European Union supports ongoing efforts undertaken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to help the country achieve a lasting solution to the current political and institutional challenges. All political actors and institutions in Guinea Bissau need to assume their responsibilities in leading the country back on the path to stability, and to reinforce the rule of law.

The EU will continue to follow closely the situation in Guinea Bissau together with other international partners, including the UN, the AU, ECOWAS and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
